Dr. A. J. "Jack" Pickard

Dr. A.J. “Jack” Pickard, 97, of Gerry, N.Y. and formerly of Bemus Point, N.Y., died Sunday, November 8, 2015 at Heritage Green Rehab & Skilled Nursing, Greenhurst, N.Y. surrounded by his loving family. Jack was born on April 1, 1918 in Bemus Point, N.Y., the son of the late Max A. and Margaret Frank Pickard. He graduated from Bemus Point High School in 1935 and attended N.Y State College of Forestry in Syracuse in 1937. He then transferred to Grove City College and graduated in 1941 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Arts. Jack then went to the University of Pittsburgh, College of Dentistry and graduated in 1944 with high honors. During his college years he played golf at Grove City College his junior and senior years. During his years at Grove City College he was in the Fraternity- Delta Iota Kappa. While at Pittsburgh College of Dentistry he was in Delta Sigma Delta- Dental Fraternity (International) and Omicron Kappa Upislon- Dental Fraternity (National). Jack’s first dentist office was in Warren, PA from 1945- 1952. He then had an office in Jamestown from 1952- 1955. In 1955- 1957 he served in the U.S. Army 867AAA Batillion Duty @ Elmendorf Air Force Base, as Chair of Fixed Prosthetics. Following serving in the U.S. Army, Dr. A.J. Pickard, D.D.S., Office opened in Bemus Point, where he practiced for twenty-five years and retired in 1983. Jack was a board member and a crew member of the Sea Lion Project. He was also a former President of Bemus Point School Board and Chautauqua County School Boards. Jack was an avid golfer with 18 holes-in-one and was also an avid fisherman. In later years he began running and ran in the bridge run across the new Chautauqua Lake Bridge. He also had a love for woodworking and had built some beautiful furniture over the years. Jack was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret Hjalmarson Pickard (2010) and his daughter, Ann Nolloth (2009). He is survived by two sons, John C. (Gail) Pickard, of Rockmart, GA and Max R. (Jeanine) Pickard of Jamestown, N.Y. and one daughter, Meg A. Pickard, of Bemus Point, N.Y.; thirteen grandchildren, Bernadette and Celeste Jones, Tameka (Vandy) Alderman, Samantha, Jackson and Kristofer Nolloth, Sarah (Peter) Kovacs, Christian and Ben Pickard, Peter (Lindsey) Johnson, Leah (Charles) Watkins, Nina (Mark) Kaltenbaugh and Seth Massey; five nephews, David, Thomas, Andrew, J. Richard and Daniel Goodell. Also surviving are several great grandchildren. Friends may call at Powers, Present & Sixbey Funeral Home, 316 East Fifth Street, Jamestown, on Tuesday from 6- 8 PM. A Memorial Service will be held there Wednesday at 11:00 AM. Chaplain Samuel Shreffler will officiate. Inurnment will be in Bemus Point Cemetery.
