Carmela T. Cala

January 25, 1929 - September 26, 2016

Carmela T. Cala, 87, of Frewsburg Rest Home and formerly a native of Jamestown, N.Y. passed away on Monday, September 26, 2016 at WCA Hospital. She was born on January 25, 1929 in Jamestown, N.Y., the daughter of the late Sebastiano S. and Sarah Costanzo Cala. Carmela was raised and educated in Jamestown and graduated from Jamestown High School in 1946. She also attended Jamestown Community College and Jamestown Business College. She worked as a shipping clerk at Webber- Knapp Corporation for twenty-seven years and retired from there in 1991. In her earlier years she had worked at 7- Up Bottling Company for sixteen years. Carmela was an active member of St. James Roman Catholic Church. She had received an award from Buffalo Diocese the Pro Deo Award for thirty years of service as a counselor with Catholic Youth Organization. She made 10,000 Rosaries for Catholic Missions worldwide. She was also a member of the John Tiffany VFW Auxillary, YMCA Cardiac Rehab Program and a volunteer for Meals on Wheels and Red Cross. She assisted with secretarial role for midget football. She was an avid Professional Baseball fan. Carmela was also a member of the Jamestown Jammers Booster Club since she was in high school. In 2001 she was awarded with Lifetime fan award of the Jamestown Jammers Baseball team. Carmela was known as the “Sunshine Girl” at the Frewsburg Rest Home. She made many laminated puzzles for others to enjoy and they were displayed at the Frewsburg Rest Home. She was also an avid Snoopy fan (Charlie Brown). Carmela was an avid traveler she had traveled through the U.S., Mexico, Puerto Rico and Italy. She had traveled to fourteen countries. The family would like to send a special thank you to four special people in her life. Jackie and Brian Shannon, Deacon Mike Lennon and Steve Sisco. Carmela is survived by two nieces, Veleda S. Newman of Girard, PA and Cathleen J. (Christopher) Barber of Sinclairville, N.Y.; and one nephew, Joseph G. (Tammy) Cala of Belmont, N.C.; several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents she is preceded in death by a sister, Sarah M. Winenow and a brother, Joseph T. Cala and his wife, Phyllis Cala, one niece, Sara Jo Hartwell. Memorial contributions may be made to the Heart Association, 316 Washington Street, Jamestown, NY Chautauqua Region Community Foundation, 418 Spring Street, Jamestown, NY or St. James Roman Catholic Church, 27 Allen Street, Jamestown, NY 14701 Family and friends may call at Powers, Present & Sixbey Funeral Home, 316 East Fifth Street, Jamestown, on Thursday from 5-7 P.M. A prayer service will be held there on Friday at 11:00 AM. Deacon Michael Lennon, Deacon of St. James Roman Catholic Church will officiate. Burial will be in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, Jamestown, NY.
