J. Bruce Powers, 85, of 5222 Winona Ave., Stow, died at 3:30 P.M. Friday (Feb. 28, 2003) in his home. He was born Aug. 17, 1917 in Jamestown, son of Leland R. and Neva Brown Powers. He attended DeVeaux Military Academy in Niagara Falls, graduated from Jamestown High School in 1937, and earned a bachelor of arts degree from the college of Wooster in 1941. He was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran of World War II, serving as a pilot and flight instructor in the Pacific, and served in the Marine Corps Reserves until retiring in 1963 with the rank of major. Before retiring in 1993, he was the fourth generation owner/operator of the Powers Funeral Home, which had been established by his great grandfather in 1874. Memberships: Ira Lou Spring Post #149, The American Legion, John W. Tiffany Post #53, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Tail Hook Assoc., Chautauqua Aerie #2145 F.O.E., University Club of Buffalo, Navy Relief Assoc., Cornerstone Christian Center, Full Gospel Businessmen's Fellowship International, where he served as field representative and started the prison ministry at Colllins Correctional Facility, and Jamestown YMCA. He was a former advisor to Jamestown Chapter of Womens Aglow, former member of Kiwanis Club, Marine Corps League, Fleet Marine Reserve, National, NYS, and Chautauqua County Funeral Directors Associations, and boards of directors of ILS Club and Blockville Union Burying Ground. Survivors: Wife - the former Muriel D. Prosser, whom he married May 18, 1975 in their home in Stow Daughter - Candace A. Moyer Son - James B. Powers Grandchildren: Kristin and Jon Moyer, Evan Powers Sister - Carol P. Gustafson The Rev. William Blair, The Rev. Donald L. Foley, and the Rev. Kenneth W. Hodgins will officiate at the service.
