Lura Siggins

Lura B. Siggins, 90, of 924 Southwestern Dr., Busti, died at 10:10 P.M. Thursday (July 7, 2005) in her home. She was born Feb. 27, 1915 at Palmer?s Corners in the Town of Busti, the daughter of Eugene and Belle Root Bucklin. She was a graduate of the former Lakewood High School, and was also a graduate of the Hamot Hospital School of Nursing in Erie. In earlier years she had worked as a private duty nurse, assisting many people in the Town of Busti during times of illness. She had also been the co-owner with her husband of the former Siggins Gulf Station in Busti, had served as Town of Busti Registrar of Vital Statistics for many years, had been a bus driver and census taker for the Southwestern Central School District, worked as an election inspector for many years, and had served as a police matron for the Town of Busti. She was a member of the Busti Federated Church, where she was active with the Philathea Society, was a co-founder of the Busti Loan Closet, and been a member of the Busti Cemetery Association, The Reading Club, The Over the Hill Hikers, the Busti Republican Committee, Busti Grange # 909, had been a volunteer worker for the American Cancer Society, and had been a volunteer worker and long time blood donor for the American Red Cross. Always one with a great interest in, and knowledge of animals, especially horses, she also enjoyed oil painting. She loved spending time with her family, including her sons-in-law Jim Snavely, Don Peterson, and Al Ferrell, and daughter-in-law Debbie Siggins, and her grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great great grandchildren, and looked forward to their annual ?Spring Fling? family trips. She is survived by her husband, John H. Siggins, whom she married Oct. 31, 1936 in Busti; a son, John H. Siggins II of Busti; three daughters: L. Janet Peterson of Gerry, Susan J. Snavely of Wabash, Ind., and Deborah M. Ferrell of Matthews, N.C.; seventeen grandchildren: Dale and Peter Peterson, Sarallyn Keller, Darlene Livengood, Becky Mast, Janet Border, John Carpenter, Christine Stefanatos, Lisa Betzer, Nancy and David Snavely, Tim and Andy Ferrell, and John Clair, Rushton, Daniel, and Catherine Siggins; thirty-two great grandchildren; and six great great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a grandson, Matthew Ferrell; three brothers: Lawrence, Harold, and Gilbert Bucklin; and a sister, Edna Hallister. A memorial service will be at 5:00 P.M. Saturday, July 16, in Busti Federated Church. Burial will be in Busti Cemetery. The family will receive friends immediately following the memorial service Saturday in the church.
