Peter Smith

February 4, 1922 - May 21, 2002

Peter J. Smith, age 80, of 315 East Sixth St., died at 6:47 P.M. Friday (May 17, 2002) in Hamot Medical Center, Erie. He was born February 4, 1922 in St. Cloud, Minn., son of Murray N. and Lucille Grant Smith. He was a graduate of South Park High School in Buffalo, and was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran of World War II, having served in Guadalcanal, New Zeeland, and New Guinea. Before retiring, he had been employed as a switchman for 35 years by Alltel Corp. and its predecessor companies, Mid-Continent Telephone and Jamestown Telephone Co. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church, where he had served as a deacon and church officer. Always a friendly person, he will be remembered as one who looked out for and assisted his neighbors, particularly the elderly. In later years he was a familiar figure outside of his East Sixth Street home, where he enjoyed greeting his friends and neighbors as they passed by. Survivors: Wife - the former Joan Bastian, whom he married Sept. 15, 1984 Son - Robert Murray Smith Daughter - Susan L. Tabor Grandchildren - Eleanor R., Peter J., Bryce L., and Virginia E. Smith Sisters - Betty Nash and Judy Quinn He was preceded in death by his first wife, the former Ruth L. Marter, whom he married in 1945, and who died December 1, 1983; and by his step mother, Julia Smith. Rev. Thomas Sweet will officiate at the service. Burial will follow in Lake View Cemetery.
