Sandra J. Merwin
August 15, 1941 - February 21, 2015
Jamestown- Sandra J. Merwin, 73, a retired food service manager for Jamestown Public Schools, where she worked for 25 years, lost her battle with kidney disease on February 21, 2015 at Lutheran Social Services. She was born August 15, 1941 the daughter of the late Mark and Alice Salter Merwin in Olean, NY. Ms. Merwin moved to Jamestown in June of 1959 where she has led a full and active life. Many will remember her as a co-owner operator of the Chanticleer Diner, a singer with Dorothy Brooks, an active member and costume mistress of Little Theatre of Jamestown, a member of Sweet Adelines, and an avid, avid sewer. She always had projects to finish. If this wasn’t enough to keep her busy, she ran three successful political campaigns, served on the Jamestown City Committee, and was a member of the Woman’s Republican Club. Most importantly Sandy centered her life around community service, serving on the board of Joint Neighborhood Project, as secretary of the Lakewood Chautauqua County Food Association and a member of Koinonia. Her greatest service was at First Presbyterian Church of Jamestown where she sang in the choir, taught Sunday school, lead Sarah Circle, served as an Elder, and was Chairman of the Hospitality Committee for the last fifteen years. This last fall she was humbled by the dedication of the Sandra J. Merwin Fellowship Hall. Her response to this was others do more than I do. Sandra will be remembered as a gracious lady who spent her whole life always doing for others. No matter what Sandy had going on she would stop immediately to help someone in need. Her kind, gentle soul, love of life, generous heart, and valiant spirit made her an inspiration to all who knew her. Ms. Merwin is survived by her sister, Marsha M. Merwin of Jamestown, her Godchildren, Kristine (Curtis) Carr of Frewsburg and Karen (Todd) Toney of Fort Mill, SC., her cousins, Sally, John, Michele, and Olivia Merwin.
