Sissie Alice Davis, 94, formerly of 48 W. 14th St., died at 6:00 P.M. Tuesday (Aug. 27, 2013) in Heritage Park Rehabilitation and Skilled Nursing. She was born Feb. 20, 1919 in Gretna, Va., the daughter of General Lee and Beatrice Edwards Van Hook. A homemaker, she enjoyed family gatherings and working in her flower gardens, but especially loved her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and the family dogs. She was a member of the Emmanuel Baptist Church. Surviving are four daughters: Lucille (Joe) Clarett of Rochester, Pauline Herndon of Knoxville, Tenn., Ella Hodnett of Jamestown, with whom she had made her home, and Gloria Northington of Peoria, Ariz.; nine grandchildren: Scott Hodnett and Ralph Herndon, both of Jamestown, Denise (Cecil) Taylor of Roanoke, Va., Lolita Herndon of Seattle, Wash., Alana Cumming and Anthonette (David) Colman, both of Rochester, N.Y., Tammy (Russell) Welch of Cocoa Beach, Fla., James (Dawn) Davis of Titusville, Fla., and Michelle Clarett of Brooklyn, N.Y.; twelve great grandchildren; and two sisters: Sarada Wilson of Virginia, and Nannie Witcher of Jamestown. She was preceded in death by her husband, Junior Gilmore Davis, who died in 1985; a sons, Hayward Davis; two brothers: Robert and James Van Hook; and by two sisters: Ruth Oakes and Anna Washington. The funeral will be at 1:00 P.M. Tuesday, Sept. 3, 2013 in Emmanuel Baptist Church. The Rev. Leroy Walker will officiate. Burial will be in Lake View Cemetery.
